No More Redundancies !

Redundancy: When a word is used that repeats something already said, and is not needed.

An example of a redundancy is: actual fact

This is a redundancy because we already know that the fact is "actual" because a fact is defined as something that has already been confirmed as true. Some people believe that redundancies help to emphasize, however all they actually do is make you look like an inexperienced writer.

Correction: Fact

The following table shows redundant expressions, with the concise corrections:

Getting Rid of there is/are and it is/was Fillers

A lot of times when you see the words there is/are and it is/was in a sentence, there are just unnecessary filters.

These fillers don't just take up space, they also delay us from getting to the main point of the sentence. Not every sentence can be revised so that the filler is no longer needed, however most can.

The following is a table showing wordy sentences with a filler, which are then revised into concise, clear sentences:

Dropping Long Lead-Ins

A very helpful way for creating concise sentences is to delete any unnecessary introductory words.

First, look at this sentence with a pointless lead in.

Wordy sentence : I am sending you this email to inform you that we have hired a new secretary for you.

Now, look at this concise sentence that is straight to the point.

Concise sentence: We have hired a new secretary for you.

Now, you may be wondering, what is a flabby expression?

A flabby expression is the extra words that prevent your writing from being clear, and having a professional sound.

Much like writing, when trying to keep concise while presenting you must:

1) Keep words to an understanding level.

2) Be straight to the point, keep it clear.

3) Have your shortened information on display and talk about your details.

4) Avoid any short forms or slang.

5) Use body language to convey expression, body language can be more important that words at times.

How to be Concise in Writing

1) Use less words -depending on your audience, pick and chose the words you decide to use. keep it short and simple when it comes to writing about anything business related because more likely the audience just wants the direct information.

2) Stay on topic - Try to only talk about the topic on hand, instead of going off topic, as that leads the audience away from the main message being conveyed.

3) Use diagrams and Charts - Charts and diagrams can be used instead of words, a picture can a lot more effective than just words.

4) Bullet points or numbered list - Bullet points or a numbered list is a very concise and effective way of expressing the information.

What is being concise ?

Concise is defined as being able to articulate yourself in a way in which it is easier for the audience to understand as well as in a few words.

Many times we tend to give out important information, but it isn’t conveyed properly, here are some reasons why:

1) There is too much unnecessary information which the audience does not need.
2) The information presented uses difficult words which some of the audience members may not understand.
